Getting started

Is Pokemon SoulGold complete?
Yes. Pokemon SoulGold is a completed game. The current release on this website is v1.1.4.
What do I need to play Pokemon SoulGold?
You need the Pokemon SoulGold BPS patch from this website, your own legally obtained compatible Pokemon Emerald TrashMan ROM, and a compatible GBA emulator or device.
Does this website provide a Pokemon Emerald ROM?
No. The website provides the Pokemon SoulGold patch only. It does not host, provide or link to the copyrighted base ROM.
Which emulator is recommended?
mGBA is the recommended desktop option. Use the dedicated Emulators page for the current supported Android, iOS and real-hardware options.
Can I use Delta with Pokemon SoulGold?
Starting with v1.0.5, Delta can bypass the emulator-inaccuracy warning by pressing Start. Doing so acknowledges that Delta is still considered inaccurate for Pokemon SoulGold; mGBA-based options remain recommended.

ROM patching

Which Pokemon Emerald ROM should I use?
Use the Pokemon Emerald TrashMan dump. The browser patcher validates the selected file before applying the Pokemon SoulGold patch so an incompatible ROM can be caught early.
Is my ROM uploaded when I use the browser patcher?
No. Your ROM is read and patched locally in your browser. It is not uploaded to pokemonsoulgold.com.
What happens if I choose an incompatible Emerald ROM?
The patcher checks the source ROM against the checksum expected by the Pokemon SoulGold BPS patch. If it does not match, patching is blocked and your file is left unchanged.
Can I download the patch and use another patching tool?
Yes. The current Pokemon SoulGold BPS patch is available as a normal download on the Download page if you prefer a compatible desktop or mobile patching tool.

Starters and Mega Evolution

How many starters are available?
There are nine starter choices at the beginning of Pokemon SoulGold.
Can every Pokemon SoulGold starter Mega Evolve?
Yes. Every one of the nine starter choices has access to Mega Evolution.
Does Pokemon SoulGold add new Mega Evolutions?
Yes. SoulGold includes new Mega Evolutions, including forms for Typhlosion, Meowscarada and Primarina, alongside the other Mega Evolutions available in the project.
How do Mega Stones work?
SoulGold simplifies Mega Stones into type-based stones instead of requiring a separate stone for every species.
Can I stop followers from appearing in their Mega form?
Yes. There is an option to disable Mega-form followers when the following Pokemon has a Mega Stone. Some newer ZA Mega forms still use their base-form follower because dedicated follower sprites are not yet available for every form.

Progression and exploration

When can I use the Battle Factory?
The Battle Factory becomes available after the third Gym, so facility-style battles are part of the main adventure rather than being limited to the postgame.
What are Hidden Grottos?
Hidden Grottos are special areas that can contain Pokemon or useful items. Their contents reset daily.
What changes after becoming Champion?
The postgame adds further ability progression, high-level areas, legendary and Mythical content, Battle Facilities and Title Defense challenges.
How does Fly work?
Once you own HM02 Fly and have the required badge, you can Fly from the Region Map without keeping a Pokemon capable of learning Fly in the party.
How do I get the VS Seeker?
The VS Seeker is awarded instead of the old Radio key item after completing the Goldenrod quiz. Existing saves can exchange the old Radio for the VS Seeker by speaking to the receptionist on the first floor.
What does the Acidic ability do?
Added in v1.0.6, Acidic makes Poison super effective against Steel. The ability is distributed to several Pokemon.
Can I change the shiny odds?
Yes. The settings let you use the default shiny-odds option or choose 1/256, 1/512 or 1/1024.
Can I disable night lighting?
Yes. The current game includes separate options to disable night lighting in the overworld and in battle.
What does the Docs option do?
The start-menu Docs option shows a QR code for the SoulGold documentation website. When opened, it can also check HackDex and show a toast notification if a newer game update is available.
What changed on the Summary screen in v1.0.6?
The Summary screen now shows friendship instead of the unused ribbon field, and the EV/IV page button prompts were clarified so they no longer look like they refer to the current Summary page.

Updates and saves

Will updating to Pokemon SoulGold v1.1.4 remove my save?
Existing saves are intended to move forward to v1.1.4. Back up your save before updating. Once you save in v1.1.4 with its 19-box PC storage, that save cannot be used again with older 16-box Pokemon SoulGold versions.
Does Pokemon SoulGold v1.1.4 have 19 PC boxes?
Yes. The normal v1.1.4 release itself uses 19 PC boxes, so there is no separate 19-box build to choose.
Can I return to an older 16-box version after saving in v1.1.4?
No. After a save has been written by the 19-box v1.1.4 release, do not use that save with an older 16-box Pokemon SoulGold version.
How does mass release work?
You can mass release Pokemon or Eggs from a PC box by selecting the box number, making large-scale storage cleanup much faster.
How do Innates, Classic mode and Chaos mode work?
Innates are independent from Classic and Chaos modes and can be configured through facility settings. The right-side bookshelf in Elm's Lab can also disable Innates completely at all levels. Chaos mode is specifically focused on allowing legendaries.
Which Pokemon SoulGold version should most players use?
Use v1.1.4. It is the current stable release and the only patch distributed by this website.
